Electronic Cigarettes Causing A Real Stir On The UK Motorways!

Heres something you dont see everyday, an electronic cigarette smoker mistaken for a terrorist!

All he was doing was refillign he e cigarette when the transit polixe and all other legal bosies decended on him, pleae reas the full story below..

What's the etiquette with electronic cigarettes?

An e-cigarette led to confusion on the M6. But what are the rules of smoking fake fags?

A misunderstanding over an electronic cigarette caused a major terrorist alert on the M6 Toll motorway yesterday. The incident showed what a novelty e-cigarettes are to many people and how easily confusion can develop.

But the “fake cigarette” also raises questions of etiquette. Even before the smoking ban, a restaurant-goer lighting up would annoy fellow diners. Since the ban, such behaviour would cause consternation among customers and lead the owner to fear legal action.

Smoking an e-cigarette, however, is legal in public places. Although it contains nicotine, there is no burning and only odourless steam is produced.

The health advantages of e-cigarettes over tobacco smoking have attracted celebrities including Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Moss.

However, some airlines have decided to ban them. There is a fear that they might unsettle passengers or cause people to think that smoking real cigarettes is allowed. Ryan Air allows e-cigarettes but also sells its alternative – a cotton bud soaked in nicotine.

It shows that perception, not only health, is a factor. For smoking is generally frowned upon these days.

So is it socially acceptable to take a battery assisted puff on a train or in a public library? And what about in the office or at a dinner party?…More at What's the etiquette with electronic cigarettes? – BBC News

Research On E Cigarettes

Michael Siegel, a tobacco researcher at Boston University, has been quoted as saying that e cigarettes should carry far fewer chemical risks than regular tobacco cigarettes. And although tobacco contains about 5,000 known chemicals, with a potential of another 100,000 additional chemical components as of yet unidentified, he also said that e cigarettes eliminate many of those known and unknown ingredients.

Sixteen studies were analyzed by Siegel and colleagues, all discussing the contents of e cigarettes. Their report in the Journal of Public Health Policy stated that levels of certain harmful chemicals were equivalent to levels found in nicotine patches, and hundreds of times lower than levels found in tobacco cigarettes. And in addition to their findings regarding chemical composition of e cigarettes the researchers also found evidence that use of e cigarettes appears to reduce smokers’ cravings; not only cravings for nicotine, but also for the tactile satisfaction, a need to hold something in their hands, and the oral satisfaction, a need to put something in their mouths.

Siegel and his team identified very important benefits associated with the use of e cigarettes, and published their findings in a reputable public health journal. It is easy to see that e cigarettes offer much greater potential for user satisfaction than nicotine patches or nicotine gum, and yet those two nicotine delivery methods are approved by the FDA as smoking cessation devices and e cigarettes do not enjoy the same status.

Major Benefits of an E-Cigarette over a Standard Cigarette

Do you want to enjoy the benefits of smoking, but simultaneously avoid some of the drawbacks?

If so, then one of your most viable options is the e cigarette, or electronic cigarette. This new type of cigarette allows you to light up-without using a lighter (or match). Here are some of the main benefits of e-cigarettes over standard cigarettes:

1. They can’t cause things to catch fire

Every year, standard cigarettes and cigars cause numerous fires-in homes, forests, and so on. On the other hand, since an e cigarette is electronic, the “virtual” smoking that you enjoy won’t pose a threat to other objects around it. While that’s a huge benefit for society at large, it can also provide you with peace-of-mind knowing that there’s no chance of burning down a building or forest, every time you light up.

2. They contain no tobacco or tar

Unquestionably, these are some of the most problematic ingredients in standard cigarettes. If you’ve ever seen x-rays of lungs after they’ve undergone several years’  worth of cigarette or cigar smoking-then you’d know that this is definitely a good thing. Although these are the two main ingredients that aren’t found in e cigarette, there are others that are also Missing in Action. Sometimes less is better, and that’s definitely true in the case of electronic cigarettes’ ingredients list. Your lungs will certainly thank you!

On the other hand, it’s important to note that electronic cigarettes DO contain nicotine, which clinical studies have proven to be quite addictive. So while electronic cigarettes aren’t as unhealthy as standard cigarettes are, there’re not quite “healthy” per se.

3. They’re not included in smoking bans

That’s because an e cigarette doesn’t produce any secondhand smoke. While there’s been some heated debate among experts about how dangerous secondhand smoke is, the general consensus is that it’s not the best stuff your lungs could take in. In any case, smoking electronic cigarettes will prevent you from feeling like a second-class citizen whenever you want to light up. You won’t have to step outdoors whenever you’re in the mood to smoke. Thus, you can have confidence knowing that it’s OK for you to smoke in most public places.

4. They smoke like standard cigarettes do

If you’re going to smoke a copycat cigarette, then you’ll likely want the experience of smoking an e cigarette to be as similar to smoking a standard cigarette as possible. Typically these cigarettes produce a mist that resembles the smoke of standard cigarettes. You can even find some models whose tips light up whenever you smoke them-just like a standard cigarette would.

5. They’re nearly odorless

Anyone who’s smoked or has been around smokers knows that the scent created by traditional cigarettes and cigars can easily permeate your clothes, hair, and virtually everything else around them. In contrast, e-cigarettes are nearly odorless, so that’s one less problem that you’ll have to deal with.

While electronic cigarettes have some drawbacks, they also can provide an array of benefits. These aforementioned ones are some of the most noteworthy ones that you should consider when weighing e-cigarettes.

First time using the electric cigarette

When first using an electric cigarette, consumers will need to spend $60 or more on their kit.  The kit comes with a cartridge, battery, LED light, and atomizer.  The cartridge, battery, and atomizer have a specific shelf life with the electronic cigarette.  This means you would have to replace them after a certain point.  The life span of the electric cigarette depends on the amount you smoke.  An infrequent smoker can extend the life span of an electronic cigarette, whereas the heavy smoker may use it for less than its typical lifespan.
